Trey Burke scored 19 points to lead the Wolverines past Illinois, 74-60 on Sunday, a win that could give them a number one ranking for the first time since the 1992-93 season.

“I say this every game,” Burke said, “but it just starts with defense. I think that started in the first half.” The Wolverines (19-1) held the Illini to 27 points and just 37 percent shooting overall.

Michigan received a scare when defensive anchor Jordan Morgan left the game early in the first half with a sprained ankle and did not return. “It gave three guys the opportunity to play that (don’t) get as much as they like, Beilein said of the injury. “I’m really impressed with the big guys and how they stepped up there.”

Illinois (15-6) has just two Big Ten conference wins and has lost five of their last seven games overall.
