The second-ranked Michigan Wolverines missed out on a chance to be the nation’s No. 1 team for the first time in over twenty years when they suffered their first loss of the season, a 56-53 loss to No. 15 Ohio State.

Down three on the game’s final possession, point guard Trey Burke shot a three-pointer that rattled around the rim and popped out, helping the Buckeyes hold on for a crucial victory.

“Some go in and some don’t,” said Burke.  “I thought it was going in. It looked good. I think it went in and then came out.”

After No. 1 Duke lost to North Carolina State on Saturday afternoon, the Wolverines (16-1, 3-1 Big Ten) were in position to become No. 1 in the country for the first time since November 1992.

Deshaun Thomas led Ohio State (13-3, 3-1) with 20 points, while Aaron Craft and Sam Thompson added nine a piece.

The Buckeyes led by 12 at halftime, but the Wolverines charged back in the second half to make for a dramatic finish.
