With that election far in the future, Wisconsin Congressman Paul Ryan, Mitt Romney’s running mate last year, probably sees no political danger in backing Florida Sen. Marco Rubio’s immigration reform proposal.

Ryan, considered one of the GOP’s rising stars, agreed with the principles outlined by Rubio: “modernization of our immigration laws; stronger security to curb illegal immigration; and respect for the rule of law in addressing the complex challenge of the undocumented population.”

This could be a precursor to major immigration legislation that could be in the offing later this year, provided the White House and Congress can hammer out agreements on several pressing economic issues that they presently can’t find common ground on.

Ryan and Rubio are also being somewhat pragmatic in extending an olive branch to the nation’s burgeoning Hispanic population, whose voters overwhelmingly rejected Romney and the Republican message in 2012.
