Obama unveiled a plan last week that would reinstate a ban on certain assault-style rifles and demand universal background checks on all firearms purchases, among other recommendations.

Pew found that 39 percent of respondents are behind the president’s plans, while 31 percent believe they go too far.  Another 13 percent feel Obama should have proposed even stricter limits on gun ownership.

As for the breakdowns by party affiliation, more than half of Republicans say the administration’s plans to curb gun violence go too far, while over 50 percent of Democrats are on board with him.

Independents are more divided down the middle, with 36 percent in support of the White House proposals and 33 percent against them.

Meanwhile, more men than women say Obama overstepped his bounds in calling for tighter gun control in the wake of December’s mass school shooting in Newtown, Conn.
