(ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates) — Rory McIlroy will be showcasing the Swoosh on his golf clubs this week at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship, after the Northern Irishman signed a five-year deal with Nike on Monday.
The 23-year-old was officially announced as a Nike spokesman on Monday and will join fellow golfer Tiger Woods, who is also a part of the Nike brand, on the greens in a television commercial that will air on Wednesday with the two.
“Nike has always been associated with the best athletes in the world and to join the likes of Tiger Woods, Roger Federer, LeBron James… it’s a proud moment for me and something I’ve been looking forward to,” McIlroy said.
Terms of the deal were not announced, but McIlroy has been in at Nike’s testing facility known as “The Oven” in Fort Worth, Texas working with the new club.
McIlroy has used Titleist products since becoming pro in 2009.
“It’s been a relatively easy process,” McIlroy said of the new clubs. “I feel like I’ve transitioned seamlessly from one thing to another. I’m really comfortable with all of the clubs. I’m getting more distance out of the driver and the ball. I’m comfortable with the irons, everything has fallen into place. I’m excited to put the clubs in play.”
