The vote was called at 4:38 pm by Sen. Manchin, D-W. Va., to a long round of applause from those in the Senate chamber.

Voting against the nomination were Sen. Jim Inhofe, R-Okla., and Texas Republican Sens. John Cornyn and Ted Cruz.  Sen. Kerry voted “present.”

Sen. Kerry, a 28-year veteran of the Senate, came onto the Senate floor and was greeted by hugs, slaps on the back and congratulations from other senators at 4:27 pm.

Kerry will take office in the shadow left by outgoing Sec. Hillary Clinton, who was praised by President Obama as “one of the finest secretary of states we’ve had” on CBS’ 60 Minutes earlier this week.

Secretary Clinton’s last day will be Feb. 1st.
