Stephens, who lost the first set and was down two love in the second, rallied back for a 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 victory.

“I came to play,” Stephens said when describing her comeback. “I was thinking, in a tennis match things happen, you got down an early break just keep fighting. I’m not playing a robot. I can get some chances so I’ll have some time to break and things like that. I just decided I was going to fight and do whatever I could and it worked out well.”

Stephens may have also got some help from Williams who hurt her back in the middle of the second set, hurting her serve.

“I went for this drop shot in the second set and it (back) just locked up on me,” Williams said. “I couldn’t really rotate after that much.”

The loss snaps Williams’ 20 match win streak.

Stephens now advances to her first Grand Slam semifinals where she will face top seeded Victoria Azarenka.
