“Texas Chainsaw 3D” Debuts on Top with $23 Million

The sequel to the 1974 horror classic The Texas Chain Saw Massacre opened in first place, earning an estimated $23 million.

Quentin Tarantino’s latest film, Django Unchained, finished the weekend in the second spot, raising $20.1 million.  Django Unchained and another Christmas Day release, Les Miserables, which landed in fourth place this weekend, have both made over $100 million to date.

The Hobbit, which had been the number-one movie the previous three weekends, fell to third place, with $17.5 million in ticket sales.

The Matt Damon drama Promised Land debuted in 10th place, collecting just $4.3 million.
