Freshman Shabazz Muhammad scored 23 points to lead UCLA to an upset of sixth-ranked Arizona, 84-73 on Thursday night at the McKale Center.

The Bruins (16-4) got out to a huge lead in the first half and led by ten at the break, but saw the lead whittled to single digits before Muhammad hit a big three and had a steal to put the game away.

“When the lights are on and the cameras are on, he really comes to life,” UCLA coach Ben Howland said of Muhammad.

David Wear anchored the Bruins attack down low, scoring 15 points and grabbing eight rebounds.

Arizona (16-2) could not avoid their second setback of the season despite getting 23 points from Nick Johnson. “We got down early,” Wildcats forward Solomon Hill said. “When you get down like that, it’s hard to fight back. UCLA is a great team and we couldn’t contain them.”
