As the plan stands now, you wouldn’t have to pay for crazy cat videos — and thank goodness for that. But you would have to pay if you want to see certain channels that promote original content.

YouTube, which operates as a subsidiary of Google, has asked a small number of channel producers to submit ideas for episodes that people might pay between $1 and $5 a month to watch. It’s unclear which channels will take part in subscriptions first. The site is also thinking of charging to watch certain live events, certain advice videos or do-it-yourself programs.

The cat videos are safe — for now.
