“A Good Day to Die Hard” Tops Holiday Weekend Box Office

Willis’ sequel A Good Day to Die Hard opened in first place over the holiday weekend, earning an estimated $29.3 million from Friday through Monday, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

A Good Day to Die Hard, the fifth film in the series, features Willis reprising his role of tough cop John McClane.  It has raked in $37.5 million since debuting last Thursday.

Last week’s box office champ, Identity Thief, slipped to the second spot, with $27.9 million.

The romantic drama Safe Haven debuted in third place, earning $25.2 million.  It has made $34 million since its release on Valentine’s Day.

The animated film Escape From Planet Earth, which opened on Friday, finished in fourth place, with $21 million.

Beautiful Creatures premiered in sixth place, collecting $8.9 million during the four-day weekend and $11.5 million since it hit theaters on Thursday.

Here are the top 10 movies from Friday through Monday, with estimated ticket sales, according to The Hollywood Reporter:

1. A Good Day to Die Hard, $29.3 million.
2. Identity Thief, $27.9 million.
3. Safe Haven, $25.2 million.
4. Escape From Planet Earth, $21 million
5. Warm Bodies, $10.3 million.
6. Beautiful Creatures, $8.9 million.
7. Side Effects, $7.8 million.
8. Silver Linings Playbook, $7.6 million.
9. Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, $4.2 million.
10. Zero Dark Thirty, $3.6 million.
