A’s Acquire SS Lowrie From Astros in Five-Player Deal

Major League Baseball (OAKLAND, Calif) -- The Oakland Athletics have acquired shortstop Jed Lowrie and right-handed pitcher Fernando Rodriguez from the Houston Astros in exchange for infielder Chris Carter and two minor leaguers.

The minor league players the Astros received were right-handed pitcher Brad Peacock and catcher Max Stassi.

Lowrie batted .244 with 16 home runs and 42 RBIs in 97 games with the Houston Astros last season.  He also missed two months of the season with thumb and ankle injuries.

"He always had good power for a guy in the middle of the infield," A's general manager Billy Beane said. "It's just hard to find that kind of power from a guy who can play the middle of the infield and doing it as a switch-hitter."

Peacock was driving from Florida to A's Spring Training in Phoenix when he received news of the trade.  He turned right around and headed back to the sunshine state.  The Astros hold their Spring Training in Kissimmee, Florida.
