Broner Stops Rees To Retain WBC Lightweight Championship
Published at(ATLANTIC CITY, N.J.) — Undefeated Adrien Broner (26-0, 22 KOs) retained the WBC lightweight title Saturday night at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City with a fifth round TKO of Gavin Rees (37-2-1, 19KOS).
The 23-year-old Broner took control of the fight in the fourth round when he sent Rees crashing to the canvas. In the fifth, Broner forced the 32-year-old to take a knee following a left hook to the body. Rees made it to his feet before the 10 count, but Broner continued the onslaught with body shots, sending the Welshman into the corner. Rees’ trainer Gary Lockett waived the white towel stopping the fight with one second left in the round.
“The kid was good,” Broner said of his opponent. “I feel like he will slip up and beat a couple of fighters, but I’m just on another level. He was good though, he was tougher than a steak that was cooked too long.”
Broner came into the bout weighing 134 while Rees was at 134 1/2.
