According to ESPN, concern has grown over the condition of Seattle Mariners pitcher Felix Hernandez’ elbow.

Hernandez and the Mariners had recently agreed to a seven-year contract worth $175 million, which would be the richest contract rewarded to a pitcher in Major League Baseball history. According to reports, the two sides are not close to finalizing the contract, and problems with his elbow is said to be part of the reason.

Hernandez has been one of the best pitchers in all of baseball in recent years. The 2010 American League Cy Young winner has been the face of the Mariners organization.

While he dominates on the mound, he has thrown a ton of pitches. At 26 years old Hernandez has already thrown 1,620 1/3 innings. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, since 1969, only three pitchers have thrown more innings before their 27th birthday: Bert Blyleven, Fernando Valenzuela, and Dwight Gooden.

Regardless of what happens with the extension, Hernandez is signed by the Mariners through the next two seasons.
