(QUETTA, Pakistan) — An explosion outside a fruit market in Quetta, Pakistan has killed more than 40 people and wounded scores of others, including women and children, according to the Deputy Police Chief of Quetta. However, a rescue source says more than 50 people were killed in Saturday’s attack.
The target this time was the Hazara Shite minority community.
The Hazara community that are mostly Shites have been the frequent target of sectarian extremists in Baluchistan province.
At the start of the year in January, more than a hundred Shite people were killed in a single day in three simultaneous attacks. The provincial government was sacked and governor’s rule was imposed after the provincial government failed to stop such attacks that had become frequent and deadly.
The city is tense and the Hazara community has come out on the streets to protest the attack on Saturday.
