Webb hasn’t pitched since 2009 because of shoulder problems. He was planning on making another comeback attempt but decided to walk away from baseball instead.

“With retirement, Brandon looks forward to focusing on more time with his family,” Webb said in a statement released by his agents Jonathan Maurer and Mike Montana. “He would like to thank all the countless coaches, players and friends for their support during his career.”

Webb won the 2006 National League Cy Young Award while with the Arizona Diamondbacks when he went 16-8 with a 3.10 ERA. He ends his career with a 87-62 record with a 3.27 ERA.

From 2005-2008, Webb led the Majors with 70 wins and made three All-Star teams.
