Eyecandy Images/Thinkstock(WASHINGTON) — The federal government is proposing free public Wi-Fi networks that would be so strong they could penetrate concrete walls and reach into parts of the country that are currently unconnected.

The Federal Communications Commission says these networks would encourage innovation and benefit consumers who cannot afford mobile phone and Internet bills. The idea has the backing of tech giants like Google and Microsoft, along with several cities and towns.

But AT&T, Verizon Wireless and other carriers are lobbying against public Wi-Fi in an effort to protect what is a $180 billion industry.
