(BOISE, ID)  —   Idaho Gov. Butch Otter and the state Department of Correction are moving away from a plan to build a $70 million mental health prison. Officials cited concerns about costs from state legislators and Idaho’s priorities for addressing mental health issues. They plan to explore alternatives through the Department of Health and Welfare and the Criminal Justice Commission. Otter says a facility is still needed, but must be reconsidered in light of budget restrictions and the evolving nature of options for mental health treatment.
