There is no timeline on Spezza’s return, but Senators general manager Bryan Murray says the team is hopeful the two-time All-Star will return this season.

“It’s just the best thing to do at this point,” Murray said Thursday. “You probably could take days off and play a game here and there, but that doesn’t make any sense for him or us. So getting it done, hopefully getting it cleaned out will allow him to come back at 100 percent and continue his career.”

Spezza has a history of back problems. He had those problems flare up in Sunday’s loss to Pittsburgh and had missed the teams following two games.

In 611 NHL games, the 29-year-old Spezza has scored 228 goals and dished out 393 assists.

Ottawa (5-1-1,13pts) is currently tied with Boston for the most points in the Eastern Conference.
