Johnson crashed during the second lap of last year’s race and spoke about his tough luck.

“The 500 has been tough,” Johnson said. “I’ve won (Budweiser) Duels, I’ve won the Shootout, we’ve been here in July and been very competitive and finished in the top three, but the 500 — it’s been a trophy and I might have a 10th or something.”

Johnson has only two top-10 finishes at Daytona overall since winning in 2006.

“My memory says a lot of DNFs. Last year was about as bad as it gets, leading the first lap and crashing; that wasn’t a good one. We’ll hopefully make 2.7 miles this year before anything happens,” Johnson continued.

Danica Patrick will sit up front on Sunday after becoming the first woman ever to win the Daytona 500 pole.
