The ability to negotiate with Martin was created when the Knicks opened up a roster spot by trading Ronnie Brewer to the Oklahoma City Thunder Thursday, for a second-round pick.

The team must wait for Brewer to pass a physical before a deal can be finalized, and the Knicks are hopeful to sign Martin in the next couple of days.

New York currently has a big man problem. Rasheed Wallace has been out since mid-December with a left foot injury and Marcus Camby has a plantar fascia injury in his left foot that has kept him out since mid-January. The 35-year-old Martin is expected to provide the Knicks with insurance if the other two don’t come back.

Martin played 42 games for the Los Angeles Clippers last season averaging 5.2 points and 4.3 rebounds a game. Martin hasn’t played this season, but is said to be in shape. If everything works out Grunwald hopes to sign Martin for the rest of the season.

“We watched a lot of the tape of his season last year with the Clippers and he played very well,”   We know he was working out prior to coming to New York this weekend and we’re hopeful that he is going to show he’s got what it takes to be an NBA player.  I’m optimistic that he is going to be able to come in and play for us.”
