Marlins Owner Jeffrey Loria Defends Team’s Latest Fire Sale

Marc Serota/Getty Images(MIAMI) — Now that the dust has settled on the Miami Marlins latest fire sale, team owner Jeffrey Loria is defending the team’s decision to trade away most of their high-profile players during the offseason.
The Marlins wound up trading away the likes of Jose Reyes, Josh Johnson, Mark Buehrle, and Heath Bell among others. Despite the backlash, Loria saw the moves as necessary.
“We had to turn the clock back for the moment and push the restart button and get these young players in here and get them together and look where we are in another year or so,” Loria said.
“We didn’t break up the 1927 Yankees,” Loria added. “We broke up a losing ballclub that was going nowhere.”
The Marlins projected payroll this season will be less than $45 million, which would likely be the lowest in Major League Baseball. Last season the team’s payroll was nearly $112 million.
