Notre Dame, ranked 25th, defeated 20th-ranked Pittsburgh, 51-42 on Monday night despite scoring just three points over the first 13:54 of the game.

Notre Dame (21-6) coach Mike Brey then got a technical foul for screaming at referee John Gaffney leading into a timeout. “I was just so frustrated,” Brey said. “… He probably could have thrown me out because I stayed after him and he looked away, so I thank him for that.”

That seemed to get the Irish going, as they finished the first half on a 16-3 run after missing 18 of their first 19 shots.

In the second half, Notre Dame got a big contribution from Jack Cooley, who scored 13 points and pulled down nine rebounds overall.

Tray Woodall had 11 points for Pittsburgh (20-7), who were held without a three-pointer for the second time this season.
