Thirty-eight million people took the challenge issued by Lays when the potato chip company asked the public to come up with its next new flavors in its “Do Us a Flavor” contest.

On Facebook, aspiring creators threw out their suggestions, which included chipotle and jack cheese, pepperoni pizza, barbecue pork chops and even steak and eggs.

On Monday morning, the creators of the three flavors selected as the finalists appeared on ABC’s Good Morning America.

Christina Abu-Judom from Phoenix suggested Chicken & Waffles because that’s her favorite meal.

Karen Weber-Mendham of Land O’ Lakes, Wis., suggested Cheesy Garlic Bread because when she and her family go out for pizza, they love to snack on cheesy garlic bread while they’re awaiting their main meal.

Tyler Raineri suggested Sriracha as the new flavor because his grandmother passed down her love for the spicy Thai hot sauce.

The stakes are high for the three flavor creators.  The winner of the contest will receive $1 million or 1 percent of their flavor’s 2013 net sales, whichever is higher.  The two runners-up will each win $50,000.

To submit a flavor idea for the contest, fans were asked to provide their flavor name, up to three possible ingredients and a description or inspiration for their flavor.

A judging panel that included actress Eva Longoria and chef Michael Symon narrowed down the initial submissions to the final three.

The three new flavors of chips will be available in stores Tuesday through May 4, and fans may vote until then for their favorite new flavor.

This is the first time the “Do Us A Flavor” contest was held in the United States.  It’s been held before in the United Kingdom, Australia, India and South Africa.  New flavors created as a result of those contests included Walkie Talkie Chicken, Caesar Salad, Chilli & Chocolate and Late Night Kebob.
