(NEW YORK) — If football isn’t your thing, you can still watch the other big game taking place Super Bowl Sunday, on Animal Planet: Puppy Bowl IX. For those of you who’ve never watched the Puppy Bowl before, it’s a pet-friendly spin on football.
Once again, dogs will run around a fake football field for our amusement. Puppy Bowl IX will also feature hedgehog cheerleaders and the return of the kitten halftime show.
Dan Shachner, the competition’s referee for the second consecutive year, describes the game’s penalties for ABC News Radio: “Pass interference becomes paws interference. Ineligible receiver down the field becomes ineligible retriever down the field. …We have our illegal napping, we have excessive cuteness, we also have premature watering of the lawn.”
Shachner says he’s very excited about this year’s MVP, though he won’t disclose which pooch received the honor. He does advise viewers to “watch out for the dachshunds this year, because all of our short-haired dachshunds in particular do very, very well.”
Puppy Bowl IX begins on Animal Planet at 3 p.m. Eastern and Pacific time on Sunday.
