Reds Stop Cueto from Pitching in World Baseball Classic
Published at(GOODYEAR, Ariz.) — The Cincinnati Reds will hold pitcher Johnny Cueto out of next month’s World Baseball Classic.
The Reds have the right to hold Cueto out of the WBC because he finished last season with an injury. Cueto strained his oblique eight pitches into Game 1 of the Reds divisional playoff series versus the San Francisco Giants.
“I wanted to pitch for the Dominican but the team said no. It’s all right,” Cueto said Thursday. “I am going to work to get ready for the season. I was ready to pitch. I’m 100 percent.”
The 27-year-old Cueto is considered the Reds ace. Last season Cueto went 19-9 with a 2.78 ERA and 1.17 WHIP through 217 innings of work.
