The deal is worth $6.725 million.  The 28-year-old Scherzer went 16-7 in 2012 with a 3.74 ERA and 231 strikeouts.

His strikeout total was second on the team to Justin Verlander.

His 1-0 record with a 2.08 ERA in the playoffs helped the Tigers reach the World Series, where they lost to the San Francisco Giants.

The upcoming 2013 season will be Scherzer’s fourth year with the Tigers.  He was acquired from the Arizona Diamondbacks in a three-team deal that sent Curtis Granderson to the New York Yankees.  He is 52-42 in three seasons as a starter in Detroit.
