Tony Stewart survived the wreckage and won the race and reminds everyone that racing has evolved through time.

“Sixty years ago, some of these race tracks were lined with hay bales and that was it,” Stewart told ESPN on Sunday.  “They didn’t have a catch fence, their wall was hay bales.  You look at the structure we have here at Daytona, it is an awesome structure, but they will look at ways to try and make it better.”

Stewart says the questions surrounding improving the fences around tracks should be looked into, but also reminded that it was the catch fence which saved Kyle Larson’s car from going into the grandstand.

“There were parts and pieces that ended up getting through it,” Stewart said.  “For the most part, that fence did everything it was designed to do.”

Stewart also said that it isn’t only with NASCAR that incidents occur.

“No different than going to a baseball game or a hockey game where you have balls and pucks that end up in the stands and people can’t react fast enough,” Stewart continued.  “It’s unfortunately just part of what can happen at pro sporting events.”
