(TEHRAN, Iran) — Iran says one of its senior commanders of the country’s elite Revolutionary Guard was killed on Thursday while attempting to enter Lebanon from Syria.
The Iranian semi-official Mehr news agency quoted a Revolutionary Guard spokesman as saying that Gen. Hassan Shateri “was martyred by the agents and supporters of the Zionist regime,” a name used by Tehran to refer to Israel.
According to Iran’s Press TV, Shateri “led the Iranian-financed reconstruction projects in the south of Lebanon.”
While the circumstances behind the general’s reported death are still murky, a Syrian rebel commander is claiming Shateri was killed in an attack by his fighters near Syria’s southwestern border with Lebanon.
Iran remains a close ally of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and regularly uses his country as a pathway to Lebanon, where it also provides support to Hezbollah, another sworn enemy of Israel.
