US Increases Humanitarian Funding to Syria

Scott Peterson/Getty Images(GENEVA, Switzerland) — The State Department announced Tuesday that the United States is giving an additional $19 million in humanitarian assistance funding for the Syria crisis, bringing the total amount the U.S. is contributing to $385 million.
According to the State Department, the funding has helped train nearly 875 medical personnel, treat over 410,000 patients and perform over 29,000 surgeries in Syria.
The new funding will provide additional medical supplies and emergency medical care for those within Syria, and will also be used to provide food vouchers and supplies to further support the estimated 870,000 refugees who have fled to neighboring countries since the conflict began between President Bashar al-Assad’s forces and Syrian rebels.
