The crash occurred on the final lap when Kyle Larson’s car went airborne into the frontstretch catch fencing, sheering off the front half of the car.  Large pieces of the vehicle were left inside the fencing and out on the grandstand.

Daytona officials say 28 fans were injured, with 14 being treated at local hospitals and 14 being treated at the speedway.

“We’re always made aware of the fact that we don’t know everything,” NASCAR President Mike Helton said of the safety involved in the sport.

“It’s a hard thing for NASCAR, there’s no easy solution, there never has been,” Stewart said in Victory Lane.  “NASCAR’s a extremely smart group and they’re doing everything they can to keep this from happening and that’s the main thing.”

Sam Hornish Jr. finished in second.
