(14) Harvard Stuns (3) New Mexico
Published at(SALT LAKE CITY) — They’re not just bookworms anymore.
No. 14 seed Harvard stunned third-seeded New Mexico, 68-62 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament in Salt Lake City on Thursday.
The win was the first ever in the NCAA Tournament for the Crimson (20-9).
“This is the No. 1 moment in my career,” Harvard senior Christian Webster said. “The thought came to mind that this could be the last game. We showed a lot of toughness, just persevering.”
Webster finished with 11 points and Harvard made eight three-pointers to upend New Mexico (29-6).
The Lobos shot only 37 percent. “We can’t shoot for them,” coach Steve Alford said. “We’ve had games like that, several games where we haven’t shot the ball well. It’s a glaring weakness on this basketball team.”
Harvard will take on No. 6 seed Arizona on Saturday.
