Adam Wainwright Reaches New Deal with Cardinals
Published at(JUPITER, Fla.) — The St. Louis Cardinals and pitcher Adam Wainwright agreed on a five-year contract extension worth $97.5 million on Thursday.
Wainwright was 14-13 in 2012, posted a 3.94 ERA and struck out 184 batters in 198 2/3 innings of work after missing the entire 2011 season recovering from Tommy John surgery.
“I feel like my heart is in St. Louis,” Wainwright said. “I love it there. I love driving to the field and seeing the arch, driving up and seeing the amazing Busch Stadium. It’s a treat to work there every day and it’s something that continues to take me off guard and make me feel like I am way too blessed.”
Wainwright has a 3.00 ERA and 18 strikeouts this spring in 27 innings pitched. The 31-year-old right hander is 80-48 in his eight-year career with the Cardinals.
The two-time World Series champion was set to become a free agent after the 2013 season.
