(DUNEDIN, (Fla.) — Toronto Blue Jays third baseman Brett Lawrie will start the season on the disabled list, Blue Jays skipper John Gibbons announced Monday.
Lawrie has been dealing with a left rib cage injury since playing in an exhibition game for Canada’s World Baseball Classic team March 6.
“It’s not a pain, it just doesn’t feel like my other side, it just feels like something is different,” Lawrie told MLB.com. “If something’s different, we’ve got to address that, we’ve got to get it better, I’ve got to ease on the brakes here and let it get better.”
Lawrie was placed on the disabled list retroactive to March 22, and will be eligible to return April 6.
The 23-year-old Lawrie hit .273 with 11 home runs and 48 RBIs last season for the Jays.
