(DENVER) — Colorado officials investigating the death of state prisons chief Tom Clements may find out early this week whether the suspect killed in a Texas shootout last week is the same one who killed Clements.

Police are investigating whether Evan Ebel, a Colorado resident who was recently released from a Colorado prison, killed Clements at his home last Tuesday, March 19.

Ebel, 28, was pulled over two days later in Texas, where he opened fire on a sheriff’s deputy and launched a high-speed chase that ended with Ebel being fatally injured in a shootout with cops.

Ebel was driving a black Cadillac with Colorado license plates that police said matched the description of a vehicle seen in Clements’ neighborhood at the time of the murder.

Lt. Jeff Kramer of the El Paso County, Colo., sheriff’s department said on Monday that police are awaiting results of the ballistics test to determine whether the weapons Ebel used in the Texas shootout were the same used to kill Clements.

The results could come back early this week, “possibly today,” Kramer said.

Police in Denver are also hoping to determine whether Ebel was responsible for a murder of a pizza delivery driver there on Sunday, March 17.

Kramer said that police still do not have a motive for the alleged crimes.

“We continue to look into Ebel’s background, but have no answers right now concerning motive,” he said.
