Johan Santana Will Have Shoulder Surgery

Eliot J. Schechter/MLB Photos (SARASOTA, Fla.) — New York Mets pitcher Johan Santana will have surgery to repair a torn anterior capsule in his left shoulder, ending his 2013 season.
This will be the second time in less than three years that Santana will have the surgery. It will be performed again by team doctor David Altchek.
The first time he had the surgery, Santana didn’t thow a big league pitch until 19 months later.
This type of surgery hasn’t been performed on many major league pitchers. Some of the more recent pitchers include Rich Harden, Dallas Braden, Chien-Ming-Wang, Mark Prior and Chris Young.
The 34-year-old Santana is still owed $31 million from the Mets this season.
