Ronald Martinez/Getty Images(NEW YORK) — Forward Juwan Howard signed a 10-day contract with the Miami Heat Saturday.

The 40-year-old Howard was part of the Heat last season when it won the NBA Championship.

“Juwan is a key part of the championship culture here in Miami,” Heat general manager Pat Riley said Saturday. “He is essential to this team and can still play this game at a high level in some of our biggest games yet to come. He has a unique veteran savvy and will provide leadership and experience to our team.”

A little over a week after Miami won the title last season, Howard started working out at the teams practice facility.

When the Heat decided in September not to bring back Howard, head coach Erik Spoelstra said there still was a possibility Howard could join the team later in the season.

In his previous 18 NBA seasons, Howard has averaged 13.4 points, 6.2 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game.

Howard is expected to be with the team Sunday when it takes on the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden.
