Oz the Great and Powerful: In this prequel of sorts to the 1939 classic The Wizard of Oz, James Franco plays a magician who’s swept away from Kansas to the Land of Oz, where he encounters three witches and becomes the great wizard.  Mila Kunis, Rachel Weisz and Michelle Williams play the witches — Williams is a good witch — in the film, which was helmed by Spider-Man director Sam Raimi.  Zach Braff also stars, voicing a monkey.  The film is screening in 3D.  Rated PG.

Dead Man Down: Colin Farrell plays a mob enforcer out for revenge against his boss, while connecting with a female victim of said boss who’s also seeking vengeance.  Noomi Rapace, Dominic Cooper and Terrence Howard also star. Howard, who hosted a screening of the film Thursday night in New York City’s Bryant Park Hotel said although the plot of the movie centers around revenge, “Revenge is futile…I learned early the futility of revenge.” Rated R.
