The Rockets originally selected Brooks with the 26th overall pick in the 2007 NBA Draft. He spent his first three-and-a-half seasons in Houston, where he averaged 12.8 points and 3.6 assists in 247 games.

His most productive year came in the 2009-10 season when he won the NBA Most Improved Player Award after averaging career highs of 19.6 points and 5.3 assists.

The Rockets dealt Brooks to the Suns in February 2011 for guard Goran Dragic. He would later go on to play in China and for the Sacramento Kings.

To make room for Brooks on the roster, the Rockets waived forward Tyler Honeycutt.
