(BILLINGS, MT) — Hunters have killed more Yellowstone bison in the past year than they have in decades. Approximately 250 bison who wandered out of the park and into Montana have been killed since last fall, largely by American Indian hunters under longstanding treaty rights. The hunts have drawn widespread criticism on grounds that bison are already endangered. Supporters say it prevents the spread of brucellosis, which could devastate Montana ‘s cattle industry.
