(SEPANG, Malaysia) — Three-time defending Formula One champion Sebastian Vettel edged teammate, Mark Webber to take home the checkered flag in the Malaysian Grand Prix on Sunday.
Webber was leading the race with Vettel following behind in second, when Red Bull team officials instructed Vettel to conserve fuel and tires and follow Webber home to victory lane. Instead, Vettel took the lead on Lap 46 and sped to the finish line.
“I messed up today. I apologize for that,” Vettel said. “Right now, I want to say the truth. I wasn’t aware of it, otherwise I wouldn’t take that much risk to pass someone I’m not suppose to pass at that moment.”
It’s Vettel’s 27th career F1 victory.
