Clint Dempsey scored early, and the U.S. beat Costa Rica in a World Cup qualifying match on Friday 1-0 despite heavy snow throughout.

In the 55th minute, play was stopped and the match comissioner considered calling the game off. Despite protests from the Costa Rica coaching staff, play continued and the U.S. got the win.

“It was difficult out here to see anything,” Dempsey said. “The second half, the snow coming up past your ankles, it was almost unplayable.” Workers used plows and shovels throughout to try and make the lines visible.

Michael Umana appeared to score in the 70th minute for Costa Rica, but it was dissalowed because of an offsides call.

The U.S. plays on Tuesday on the road against Mexico.
