The newspaper reports that the Federal Aviation Administration is thinking about allowing passengers to keep Kindles, iPads and other reading tablets on during takeoff and landing, provided they’re set to “airplane mode.”

The electronic emissions of e-readers do not appear to harm an airplane’s instruments.

The new rules wouldn’t apply to cellphones, which would still be restricted in flight.

Pilots support the change, perhaps hoping fewer passengers would become unruly when told to power down.
