World Cup Qualifier: USA Battles to Draw with Mexico
Published at(MEXICO CITY) — The U.S. men’s national team battled Mexico to a 0-0 tie, in a World Cup qualifying match at Estadio Azteca Tuesday night.
The tie marks only the second time in U.S. World Cup qualifying history that the Americans received a point while playing in Mexico.
“It really was an amazing team effort,” U.S. head coach Jurgen Klinsmann said. “I think technically we were very well organized. We shifted well. We closed all the spaces down. Everybody worked hard for each other.”
The tie moves the U.S (1-1-1, 4pts) into third in the Concacaf region of World Cup qualifying after playing three of 10 matches. The U.S. is currently a point behind first place Panama and trail Costa Rica on goal differential (tie-breaker). Meanwhile Mexico, the favorites before the matches started, falls to fifth.
The Americans next game is on the road against Jamaica on June 7.
