Jeter continues to have inflammation in his ankle that he broke in October.  He received a cortisone shot after being scratched from the lineup.

“I can’t rule it out until we see how the next 10 days goes,” New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said on Jeter’s status. “I’m not saying he’s going on the DL, but I can’t tell he won’t be. We’ve got to do what’s right for him and what’s right for the team.”

The Yankees will start the regular season at home against the Boston Red Sox on April 1.

“I think if you asked him (Jeter), Opening Day would be a certainty,” Cashman said. “But in fairness, I think I don’t know yet. I don’t think it’s anything serious but there is a timing issue. Because of the timeframe and everything else, I can’t tell you it’s not possible he might not be ready. I’m sure he wouldn’t be happy with anybody reading that. But I can’t not acknowledge the obvious.”

While Jeter continues to recover, Eduardo Nunez will be the starting shortstop.
