Blue Jays general manager Alex Anthopoulos said an MRI revealed a severe sprain, but the ankle is not fractured. He said that the 29-year-old Reyes could be back on the field in six to eight weeks if all goes well during rehab.

Toronto acquired the four-time All-Star from the Miami Marlins this past off-season. In 10 games with the Jays, Reyes is batting .395 with one home run, five runs, five RBIs and five stolen bases.

With Reyes on the 15-day disabled list, the Blue Jays selected the contract of shortstop Munenori Kawasaki from Triple-A Buffalo.
