Boston Marathon Suspect Manhunt Draws Big TV Audience

Approximately 42 million people were tuned into ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, Fox News Channel and MSNBC between 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. Eastern time, when it was announced that Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was taken into custody, according to Deadline.com.

The networks averaged nearly 36 million viewers over the course of primetime Friday night.  The usual number for a Friday night is 22 million.

The highest-rated program for the week ending Sunday was NBC’s The Voice.  It scored over 14 million viewers for its Monday and Tuesday editions.

CBS won the network ratings race for the week, followed by ABC, Fox, NBC, Univision, Telemundo, the CW and ION Television.

Here are the top 10 primetime programs for the week of April 15-21, according to the Nielsen Company:

1. The Voice (Monday), NBC, 14.45 million
2. The Voice (Tuesday), NBC, 14.16 million
3. Dancing with the Stars, ABC, 13.4 million
4. Dancing with the Stars Results Show, ABC, 12.73 million
5. American Idol (Wednesday), Fox, 12.71 million
6. NCIS (Tuesday, 9 p.m.), CBS, 12.61 million
7. American Idol (Thursday), Fox, 12.42 million
8. 60 Minutes, CBS, 11.91 million
9. The Big Bang Theory, CBS, 11.43 million
10. The Big Bang Theory (Thursday, 9 p.m.), CBS, 10.89 million
