The Avalanche had an 18.8 percent chance of winning the lottery after finishing the lockout-shortened season with a 16-27-5 record, good for worst in the Western Conference.

Picking second in the draft will be the Florida Panthers, who had the worst record in the NHL with a 15-27-6 campaign.  They had the best odds of winning the lottery at 25 percent.

The Tampa Bay Lightning will select third in the draft, which is set for June 30.

The lottery format changed this year, with all 14 non-playoff teams earning a chance to have the first overall pick.  Once the Avalanche won the lottery, the remaining 13 teams will pick in reverse order of their regular-season points.

Portland Winterhawks defenseman Seth Jones is projected by many to be the top selection in this year’s draft.
