Both houses in Connecticut’s General Assembly are controlled by Democrats, and there’s little doubt they’ll approve the new restrictions that Republican State Sen. John McKinney calls “a comprehensive, broad, bipartisan package that deals with mental health, it deals with school security.”

The bill also includes a ban on the sale of large-capacity ammunition magazines, a new registry for existing high-capacity magazines, and background checks for private gun sales.

The measures were proposed after the Dec. 14 shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., that left 20 children and six adults dead.

Last week, President Obama vowed that the children killed in the massacre would not be forgotten.

“The entire country was shocked, and the entire country pledged we would do something about it and that this time would be different,” the president said last Thursday as he made a plea for Congress to take action against gun violence.

“Shame on us if we’ve forgotten.  I haven’t forgotten those kids,” Obama said.

The president told the audience, which included the parents of victims of the Newtown shooting, that “we’ve cried enough” and it’s time for Congress to act on the proposals put forth by Senate Democrats.

On Wednesday, Obama will travel to Colorado — a state that’s also on the verge of approving tough gun-control laws — to keep up pressure for action to curb gun violence.  He will then head to Connecticut on Monday.
