“Associate Justice Stephen Breyer underwent reverse shoulder replacement surgery for a proximal humerus fracture this morning at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital,” court spokesperson Kathleen Arberg said. “The fracture was sustained in his right shoulder in a fall from his bicycle on Friday afternoon, April 26, near the Korean War Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. He was taken by ambulance to the hospital following his injury.”

The surgery was successful and Breyer is resting comfortably, the spokesperson said. He is expected to be released from the hospital early in the week.

This is the third serious bike accident Breyer has been in over the past 20 years.

Justice Breyer was appointed by President Clinton to the Supreme Court in 1994. He is 74 years old.
Details surrounding the accident were not provided.

Last week the court held the last arguments of the term and now the justices are racing to finish writing opinions. The court will take the bench Monday to issue up to four opinions. The term is scheduled to end the last week of June.
